Access notes
White Crest is a Town of Wellfleet foot-launch site at 740 Ocean View Drive. Town rules prohibit hang gliding and paragliding from April 15 through October 1, leaving the documented flying season October 2-April 14. Use only the designated low launch directly in front of the parking lot, official beach paths, and the lawful Town-managed beach footprint. NEPHC does not manage, monitor, maintain, or supervise the site and recommends that USHPA members not fly because users do not share a consensus protocol; every pilot must make an independent same-day access and condition decision.
Site rules
  • Fly only October 2 through April 14. Do not launch, land, kite, or operate in the Town beach, adjacent dune, or parking-lot footprint during the April 15-October 1 prohibition.
  • Use only the low designated launch directly in front of the White Crest parking lot. Do not walk, climb, launch, or land on dunes, vegetation, or an improvised ridge access point.
  • Stay on Town-authorized land and official paths. Cape Cod National Seashore rules do not authorize paragliding on NPS-administered tracts, even though the Town launch lies within the wider seashore geography.
  • Beach landings are preferred. Kite only downwind of launch, give launching pilots right of way, avoid crowding, keep clear of houses and spectators, and land at least 100 feet from beachgoers.
  • H3/P3 is the site standard; H2/P2 pilots should fly only with a knowledgeable mentor. Never fly alone and do not perform aerobatics.
  • Do not treat powered paragliding as authorized. The Town and club sources reviewed here document foot-launched paragliding and hang gliding only.
Launch directions
NE, E
Direction notes
The current guide gives ENE as the working direction, 70-90 degrees ideal and 50-110 degrees acceptable. The compass entries summarize that range; they do not extend it to a true 45-degree northeast wind without site judgment.
Safety notes
  • For a standard PG wing, the current site guide gives 8 mph minimum, 10 mph ideal, 15 mph maximum, and no more than a 3 mph gust spread; verify the actual wing limits and conditions rather than using those figures mechanically.
  • High tide can reduce the beach LZ to a narrow strip. Check tide and surf, carry a hook knife, understand harness escape, and avoid low scratching that can force a downwind, tight, or water landing.
  • Rotor, wind gradient, crosswind turbulence, blowback, tree limbs, signs, a tall pole, cars, people, and power lines at the rear of the parking lot are documented hazards. Keep the speed system connected and monitor upwind groundspeed.
  • Top landing is optional only for experienced pilots in light wind; the paved, crowded parking area and rear power lines make beach landing the preferred option.
  • Occasional low aircraft transit the shoreline. The clean FAA R/P point screen does not replace visual separation, NOTAM/TFR review, or route-specific airspace checking.
Additional notes
Included as a public seasonal foot-launch because current club information and official Town rules align on the legal season and designated White Crest launch. NEPHC's explicit non-management warning is preserved: this is not a club-supervised site and the row is not a recommendation to fly on a given day.
Map pin (exact launch)
Current NEPHC coordinate for the designated low cliff launch directly in front of the White Crest Beach parking lot.
