Access notes
Park at the public M trailhead and inspect the FWP LZ west of the lot before hiking the steep public trail to the 3/4 or upper launch on Forest Service land. The current club guide requires a local site briefing and local-pilot presence; the area is also a heavily used hiking destination.
Site rules
  • Get a current Bozeman Airforce/local-pilot site briefing, do not fly alone, and stay within current USHPA and club parameters.
  • Inspect the LZ before hiking, keep clear of powerlines and rose clumps, and clear the LZ promptly after landing.
  • Do not proximity-fly hikers or established trails. Use only the primitive 3/4 and upper launch areas described by the current guide.
  • Confirm radio frequency 151.505 with pilots on site and monitor the fish-hatchery flag for canyon outflow.
  • Do not treat the nearby legacy Big Lew pin as a separate public access path; it is consolidated into this current M launch complex.

Direction notes
The current guide gives roughly 210-260 degrees for the upper and 3/4 launches, with 220-240 ideal; crosswind and katabatic flow are key constraints.
Safety notes
  • Crosswind west/northwest flow may not be felt until the wing is overhead. Down-canyon katabatic flow can create a shear layer above the LZ near sunrise or sunset.
  • Powerlines border the LZ west and south and wild-rose clumps occupy parts of the field.
  • The site is crowded with hikers; maintain generous separation and be prepared to abort when trail or launch traffic makes setup unsafe.
  • The launch is 5.534 km and the LZ 5.294 km from FAA facility MT71 Edsall Field; neither intersects current FAA Restricted/Prohibited airspace.
Additional notes
The current club describes two M launches. ParaglidingEarth 23198 Big Lew is merged here rather than creating a second near-identical map pin.
Map pin (exact launch)
Published M launch point representing the current upper/3/4 public-land launch complex.
Navigation warning
The pin is not the LZ, parking lot, primitive 3/4 spur, or a guarantee that hikers and conditions permit setup today.
