Access notes
This VHPA-managed, hike-only Sugarbush launch is usable only outside ski season and all lift/grooming operations. Current USHPA/VHPA membership, annual waiver, site introduction, XC skill, and Restricted Landing skill are required. From Lincoln Peak, hike the Gate House Express service road and Sunrise trail for roughly 60-75 minutes. A slopeside Sugarbush Village drop-off may be used only with an immediate vehicle shuttle because no parking is allowed there.
Site rules
  • Do not fly during ski season or while lifts or grooming operations are active; confirm current resort dates before travel.
  • Maintain current USHPA/VHPA membership and annual state waiver. No P2; P3 requires approved observation; first-time P4 requires a site introduction; XC and RF skills are mandatory.
  • Use the current hike route. Do not park at the Sugarbush Village drop-off, trim vegetation, camp, or use unsanctioned vehicle access.
  • Use the primary LZ at 44.136292,-72.888013 and immediately head toward it if not climbing. Never attempt a mid-mountain landing.
  • Maintain at least 500 vertical feet above the Gate House Express lift and at least 75 feet over all lift cables.
  • Do not infer PPG permission. This row documents foot-launched PG only.
Launch directions
SE
Direction notes
Official ideal sector is approximately 130-150 degrees, with about 3 mph minimum, 8 mph ideal, and 12 mph maximum.
Safety notes
  • The shallow SE-facing Sunrise trail works early as anabatic flow develops, but the safe cycle and actual direction must be observed on launch.
  • The launch-to-LZ glide is about 4.4:1. If the Gate House thermal does not connect, turn toward the LZ immediately; no mid-mountain landing is acceptable.
  • The primary LZ is a narrow, downhill, terraced gravel lot with drainage ditches, trees, and thermal triggers. RF skill and an early approach plan are essential.
  • Active glider towing occurs at Warren-Sugarbush Airport; monitor current traffic and airspace conditions despite clearing the fixed facility buffer.
  • Strong spring thermals, sink, headwind, thunderstorms, cloud suck, lift infrastructure, and few landing choices create an advanced commitment.
Additional notes
Current exact Sugarbush southeast launch omitted by the automated manifest. It is distinct from Lincoln Peak and Stein's by coordinate, aspect, hike, early-day timing, and lift-clearance constraints.
Map pin (exact launch)
