Access notes
Current Compass AirSports free-flight/tandem area using a narrow gravel dead-end tow road west-southwest of Sauk City. This is a scheduled surface-tow operation, not an unattended walk-in launch. Coordinate with Compass AirSports or the active local tow group for the current tow segment, qualified tow operator, equipment, participant agreement, traffic control, land/road status, briefing, and retrieval plan. No PPGs are allowed by the published site rule.
Site rules
  • Fly only with the current Compass/local tow operation, a qualified tow technician, suitable tow equipment, and the operator's current briefing and participant agreement.
  • No paramotors. The source explicitly says NO PPGs.
  • Give absolute priority to people, residents, farm operations, and vehicle traffic on or near the gravel road; stop operations whenever the corridor is not clear.
  • Do not fly low over nearby farms and do not land on asphalt roads.
  • Identify irrigation canals before towing and landing; avoid every canal and wet/soft field area.
  • The narrow launch/landing corridor requires good ground handling. Do not operate if the tow team cannot maintain clear lateral and abort space.
  • Observe traffic at Sauk/Prairie Airport and all other airspace even though the reviewed point clears the fixed 3.2 km exclusion.
  • Do not tow when average surface wind approaches 15 mph; the source identifies about 12 mph as the upper good-flying average and warns that west wind over hills is turbulent.
Launch directions
NE, E, SE, SW, W, NW
Direction notes
The east-west tow corridor supports both tow directions with conditional diagonal components. The tow operator must choose the actual direction from wind, road traffic, field condition, line geometry, and safe abort/landing space.
Safety notes
  • This is a road-tow operation with vehicle, pedestrian, farm, towline, weak-link, lockout, line-retrieval, and premature-release hazards; an experienced tow team is essential.
  • Irrigation canals cross adjacent fields and may be shallow but wet and difficult to see from approach height.
  • Strong west flow is turbulent after crossing hills. Wind aloft can exceed the surface indication, and a narrow corridor leaves little tolerance for poor ground control.
  • The published and catalog coordinates differ by about one kilometer along the Fen Road corridor. The exact active tow line, start point, landing sector, and parking are deliberately left to the current operator.
  • Sauk/Prairie Airport is 4.863 km from the displayed point, outside the fixed buffer but close enough that traffic awareness and conservative altitude/route planning remain mandatory.
Additional notes
Included as a club/contract PG tow site because Compass currently lists Sauk City for solo and tandem free flight and the May 2025 record supplies a repeatable tow-road protocol, explicit no-PPG rule, wind limits, access route, and hazards. Independent towing or navigation to an assumed road segment is not authorized.
Map pin (approximate field)
The displayed point is the ParaglidingEarth Fen Road tow coordinate. The current ParaglidingSpots catalog places the same Sauk City/Cullom tow corridor about one kilometer west at 43.2567,-89.78748. Both points clear the hard screens, but neither should be treated as today's tow start.
Navigation warning
Approximate Fen Road tow-corridor marker only. Do not set up, block a road, enter a field, stretch a towline, or launch from this pin. Contact Compass AirSports or the current tow group for the exact lawful operating segment and parking.
