Pass Creek launch and LZ are on Montana state land along Rocky Mountain Road. Carry the current state-land recreation permit, get current Bozeman Airforce/local intel, park only in the small west-side turnout without blocking the wire gate, and confirm that the fence crossing and every intended landing remain on public land.
Site rules
  • Carry the current Montana state-land recreation permit and obtain a current local briefing before using the lower, midway, or upper launch.
  • Park only in the small turnout, do not block the livestock gate, stay on public land, and avoid every neighboring private parcel and unwelcome landing area.
  • Do not launch in north or east wind. West is preferred; south wind can produce rotor.
  • The upper launch is P3 recommended. Follow current USHPA limits and the club's local-pilot, radio 151.505, and no-solo guidance.
  • If target shooters are present near an LZ, coordinate visibly before hiking or landing; the club suggests carrying a whistle for the landing approach.

Direction notes
Lower launch prefers west, midway works west-southwest, and upper works south-west. Avoid north-east flow and assess rotor for the chosen launch.
Safety notes
  • All launches are unimproved hike-up areas. LZs are uneven, sage-covered, and bounded by barbed wire and private land.
  • Midday thermals can be strong, south flow can rotor, and the published lower, midway, and upper launch/LZ geometries differ.
  • Target shooting occurs in the area; never assume a shooter has seen a wing or pilot.
  • The launch is 3.439 km and the disclosed LZ is 3.326 km from FAA facility 53MT Pass Creek, only 0.239 km and 0.126 km beyond the hard buffer. A fresh route, LZ, NOTAM, TFR, and airspace review is essential.
Additional notes
Retained under the standing state permit and club-briefing path. Its unusually narrow FAA-buffer margin is deliberately visible; no PPG use is inferred.
