Access notes
Panorama is an active BMF PG site on the Talimena Scenic Drive. BMF membership, a current guide, and the rating/mentor process are required. The launch entrance is a locked gate about four miles along Highway 1; stay on the graveled road, keep it clear, and use designated parking. The exact LZ is 34.7949,-94.8880. The National Forest asks pilots not to drive through the LZ gate except for emergencies or necessary maintenance. Visit the LZ before launch and obtain the current gate, parking, launch, LZ, and retrieval briefing.
Site rules
  • Maintain BMF membership and complete the current rating, instructor-clearance, first-five-flight mentor, and site-orientation process.
  • Carry helmet, reserve, radio on 151.925 MHz, and cell phone; visit the LZ before every flight.
  • Use the locked-gate gravel road and approved parking without blocking access; do not drive into the LZ except under the National Forest emergency/maintenance rule.
  • Clear the center landing strip immediately, watch for hang gliders with right of way, and comply with current LZ traffic instructions.
  • This row establishes unpowered PG only.
Launch directions
NE, E
Direction notes
Ideal 90 degrees and acceptable 45-110 degrees; north cross can create immediate launch turbulence.
Safety notes
  • The current PG sector is ideal 90 degrees and acceptable 45-110; north cross can create turbulence immediately after takeoff.
  • Large boulders border the launch. Leave at trim speed, and when 100 feet below the launch cut fly directly to the LZ rather than extending the ridge.
  • The tree-surrounded LZ can generate bullet thermals, strong sink, rotor, and minor collapses. Pilots below P4 should avoid thermic clear-day landings, typically 11 AM-4 PM, and should not use big ears below 500 feet on approach.
  • Launch is 16.914 km and LZ 18.362 km from operational OK35 Choctaw Indian Hospital heliport; both intersect zero current R/P polygons.
Additional notes
Current exact club-operated PG site. Locked-gate and mentor requirements are preserved as club/contract access rather than public walk-up use.
Map pin (exact launch)
Exact January 2026 BMF launch coordinate, with a distinct exact LZ at 34.7949,-94.8880.
Navigation warning
Exact locked-gate launch pin, not access. Obtain current BMF membership, gate, mentoring, launch, LZ, National Forest, and parking instructions before travel.
