Access notes
Kilbourne Hole is within Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument and is not wilderness. The current guide publishes the east PG launch and main LZ; the official club directory also explicitly identifies the site for PPG. Much of the maar is owned by JC Ranches, so remain on legal roads and current public-access areas, verify the actual powered operating surface with RGSA/BLM, and do not infer access to private parcels.
Site rules
  • Use the published east launch for PG and obtain current land-manager/club direction for any PPG ground start; private ranch acreage is not blanket access.
  • If below launch, head immediately to the bottom LZ or top-land; never attempt to land on the steep boulder field between the rim and basalt cliff.
  • Do not fly alone; carry satellite communication because the bottom has no reliable external communications.
  • Follow current BLM/monument road, fire, camping, motorized-use, and temporary-closure rules.

Direction notes
Current east-launch guide publishes 220-270 degrees acceptable and 225-245 ideal; no separate PPG heading is published.
Safety notes
  • P2 east launch; ideal 225-245 degrees, acceptable 220-270, 7-15 mph with 12 mph ideal and gusts up to 5.
  • Black basalt produces very strong warm-season thermals; fly early/late or in suitable smooth conditions and use a first-time guide unless an experienced P3 mountain pilot.
  • The main LZ is large but remote; avoid drain holes, bushes, cliff-side boulders, and a fence south of launch.
  • Launch and LZ are 25.622 km and 26.604 km from DNA Doña Ana County International Jetport and outside current R/P polygons.
Additional notes
Both PG and PPG are explicit in official RGSA material. The coordinate is exact for the east PG launch; powered access remains site-level until a current PPG start is supplied.
Map pin (exact launch)
Exact current PG east launch with separate exact main LZ; the PPG ground point is not published.
Navigation warning
Exact PG launch, not an automatic PPG start or private-parcel access. Verify the current powered surface, roads, land status, and closures with RGSA/BLM.
