Access notes
Katydid's launch and LZ are privately owned and used under Free Spirit Flight's landowner agreements. Hold current USHPA and FSF memberships, arrange a Board-designated local member for access/site briefing/flight activity, and obtain landowner Rick Stroman's permission before entering, normally through the lead vehicle stopping at his house. The site is H2/P2 with new H2/P2 pilots supervised. Use the lawn and logging-road access only when it will not rut the property.
Site rules
  • Hold current USHPA and Free Spirit Flight memberships and use the Board-designated local-member accompaniment process for access, briefing, and flight.
  • Obtain current landowner permission before entering the private launch property; the lead vehicle normally handles this stop on the way to the logging road.
  • Do not disturb the property during the late-November/early-December hunting closure, and recheck crop-related closures or alternate-LZ changes before every visit.
  • Do not drive if tires spin or the logging road will rut; walk equipment in instead. Notify the landowner if final retrieval occurs after dark.
  • Powered paragliders, powered hang gliders, and PG mini-wings are prohibited. Carry a helmet and reserve and identify the current LZ before launch.
Launch directions
SW, W
Direction notes
Official best direction is 250 degrees, with rotor/sink likely beyond the 230-270-degree range. Use the source's lower limits for crossed or gusty flow.
Safety notes
  • Best conditions are around 250 degrees at 10-15 mph. Rotor or sink becomes likely outside 230-270 degrees; use the detailed FSF smooth-wind and gust limits rather than a broad SW/W label.
  • The wide grassy launch drops away quickly. Topographic saddles constrain ridge-lift occupancy and can crowd the usable air near launch.
  • A high-tension line runs up the north side of the valley about a quarter mile from launch and about half a mile from the LZ; roadside telephone poles and a powerline also border the south side of the LZ.
  • The 5:1 LZ is a private level field about three quarters of a mile away. Crops can narrow or move the usable landing area, so identify the current designated field before takeoff.
  • The dirt logging road is marginal for 2WD even when dry and needs clearance/4WD when wet or rutted; preserve access by walking rather than damaging it.
Additional notes
The 2026 FSF guide provides exact current coordinates and continuous-use PG evidence, correcting the automated launch and LZ points. This is a documented private red spot with a repeatable club/local-member/landowner process. The same current club rules explicitly prohibit PPG.
