Access notes
Kahana is a State-permitted, USHPA-insured paragliding site stewarded for Hawaii Paragliding Association members. Pilots must be current USHPA and local-club members and contact a local club member before flying; the current source states that visitor membership in the local club is free. This is a standardized club-and-permit path, not unrestricted walk-in access and not discretionary red prior authorization.
Site rules
- Hold current USHPA and Hawaii Paragliding Association membership before flying; visitor membership in the local PG club is currently free.
- Contact a local club member before flying and follow the current State-permit, launch, landing-zone, and beach-use protocols supplied by the club.
- Use only the current club-recognized launch and landing areas; the published point represents a multi-launch ridge, not a single exact takeoff.
- Yield to people in the beach landing area and keep the landing zone clear; this record documents unpowered paragliding only.
Launch directions
NE, ENE
Direction notes
The current APPI weather section says NE to ENE is best and specifically warns that an overly easterly flow degrades the LZ; the exact launch among the two ridges must be selected with the local club.
Safety notes
- Winds are best from NE to ENE. When the flow is too easterly, the landing zone can lose clean airflow and produce sink or rotor.
- Ocean rain squalls can bring gust fronts, rain, and abrupt, dramatic airflow-direction changes.
- The site has multiple launches along two ridges about 250 to 350 feet ASL; the published climb from the landing zone takes about 15 minutes.
- If lift weakens, the glide from some ridge positions to the beach landing zone can be tight; obtain the current local bailout and surf-landing briefing before launch.
Additional notes
Included under the broad club/contract policy because the permit, membership, and local-contact process is documented and routine. PPG remains false because every current source identifies paragliding only.
Map pin (approximate field)
The coordinate is the published ParaglidingEarth site point for a zone with multiple launch spots on two ridges, not a surveyed takeoff, trailhead, parking point, or landing target.
Navigation warning
Approximate multi-launch site pin only. Contact the local club for the current legal approach, approved launch, landing zone, parking, and permit protocol before travel or flight.
