Access notes
Hammondsport is a current RAF site on private property. Pilots need current USHPA and RAF memberships; non-local visitors must use RAF's current permission/local-accompaniment process, and every first-time pilot needs a site briefing. P3 is required, with P2 allowed only under direct supervision by a site-familiar P3 or higher pilot. Leave the access gate as found, use only the dirt road, drive slowly, stop at the cabin, and take no vehicle beyond it.
Site rules
- Hold current USHPA and RAF memberships, obtain the required local site briefing, and use the current RAF visiting-pilot accompaniment/permission process.
- P3 is required for independent flight. A P2 may fly only under direct supervision by a P3 or higher pilot familiar with the site.
- No mini-wings. No pets, parties, fires, tree cutting, litter, crop damage, or uninvited spectators at launch or LZ.
- Respect the private-property gate and cabin: leave the gate as found, drive only the dirt access road, park without blocking users, and take no vehicle beyond the cabin.
- Use only the church Main LZ or documented Emergency LZ. Landing elsewhere is without permission; clear the active LZ immediately after touchdown and break down in the designated area.
Launch directions
NW, N
Direction notes
Official range 300-360 degrees; NW-NNW is ideal, especially 310-325 degrees. Do not treat the broad N/NW labels as approval for a crosswind launch outside that range.
Safety notes
- Both upper and lower launches are tree-bounded slots with an abrupt cliff-like transition. Pilots need reliable cliff-launch technique; above 10 mph a coordinated wire crew may be necessary.
- The current envelope is 300-360 degrees, with 310-325 ideal. Westerly crosswind can create slot turbulence and limited penetration in the gully west of launch.
- The Main LZ behind Harvest Baptist Church is not visible from launch, is about 0.9 miles away, and requires a published 7.2:1 glide from the upper launch. Leave for it promptly when getting below launch.
- Trees and buildings surround the Main LZ, and the route crosses a venturi gully. Power lines run along Route 54, the north boundary, and toward the communications tower.
- The Emergency LZ directly below launch is rough, poorly maintained, tree-enclosed, and requires a difficult carry-out; it is not a substitute for planning the Main LZ glide.
Additional notes
Hammondsport is current and operational, but the 2026 RAF page prints a launch coordinate only 77 m from its own embedded Main LZ marker, contradicting the same page's 0.9-mile distance and 660-foot descent. The older PGE launch point is 1.284 km from that LZ and is geographically consistent, so it is retained only as an approximate launch-area pin with a strict navigation warning. The guide covers foot-launched PG and does not establish PPG.
Map pin (approximate field)
PGE's historically documented launch-area point is retained because the current RAF page's printed launch coordinate conflicts with its embedded LZ and published glide. Local RAF identification is required for the permitted upper/lower slot.
Navigation warning
Approximate launch-area pin only. Do not navigate onto the private property or attempt to identify a launch from this point; arrange RAF membership, local accompaniment, and a current site briefing, then follow the landowner-approved route and launch identification.
