Access notes
North Knob is an HVFF-managed launch paired with the private Practice Hill landing field. Current USHPA and HVFF memberships are required; monthly HVFF membership is available. The normal minimum is P3, while a P2 may fly only with a mentor. Enter from Canal Street, pass the first overlook, and use the steep gravel launch road; overflow parking is at the designated Route 52 pullout/overlook arrangement.
Site rules
- Hold current USHPA and HVFF memberships before using North Knob or its paired Practice Hill LZ.
- P3 is the normal PG minimum. A P2 must arrange a mentor before the visit and comply with the current club process.
- Use the official Practice Hill LZ at 41.68737,-74.40454. If safety, traffic, turbulence, or glide makes that field doubtful, use the EFP LZ as the emergency safer field and then resolve the access issue with the site managers.
- Once the upper parking area is full, unload only as permitted and move extra vehicles to the Route 52 pullout/overlook; do not block the gravel road.
- Report any injury or major equipment damage immediately to the HVFF president or Greg Black and clear the landing field promptly.

WNW launch with a narrow 285-305-degree operating envelope; the broad W/NW labels do not expand that range.
Safety notes
- The official wind envelope is 285-305 degrees, 10 mph ideal, 15 mph maximum, and no more than 5 mph gust spread.
- Head for the LZ at or below road level; delaying below that terrain reference erodes the published 3:1 glide margin.
- The exposed rocks above the road can generate the house thermal and textured ridge/thermal lift near launch.
- The Practice Hill field lies in tree wind shadow. Maintain energy and carry appropriate speed through the landing approach while watching traffic using the training hill.
- The access trail and emergency response route are steep and constrained; confirm current site status and local assistance before flying.
Additional notes
This is a distinct current HVFF mountain launch, not a duplicate of EFP's separately managed mountain complex. Its official paired LZ is the Practice Hill field, which also supports the separately approved 30-foot training launch. No current source establishes powered operation, so ppgFriendly remains false.
