The 30-foot semicircular Practice Hill is managed jointly by resident landholder Greg Black and HVFF. Pilots must hold current USHPA and HVFF memberships and sign the site waiver annually. Without an instructor present, a PG pilot must hold P2 and already be cleared to fly the mountain sites. Reach it from Hang Glider Road, bear left at the gravel Y, and park only in the designated area by the hangar.
Site rules
  • Hold current USHPA and HVFF memberships and sign the annual site waiver from Greg Black before using the private hill.
  • Without an instructor present, pilots must be P2 or higher and already cleared to fly the mountain sites.
  • Move a landed glider immediately back up the hill or to the setup area whenever other pilots are present.
  • Pilot guests must remain in the setup area during flight activity; unaffiliated spectators are not allowed on site during operations.
  • Remain aware of the resident dog and of incoming North Knob or other Ellenville traffic using the same field.

Direction notes
The official range is 230-300 degrees. Maximum wind is 7 mph on the southwest portion and 12 mph on the west-to-WNW portion.
Safety notes
  • A tree line along Hang Glider Road creates turbulence when winds with a south component reach about 5 mph.
  • Do not use the west-to-WNW portions above 12 mph; the southwest portion has a lower 7 mph maximum.
  • The exact usable direction range is 230-300 degrees around a semicircular 30-foot hill; set streamers far enough away to reveal disturbed flow.
  • The field is also North Knob's landing zone. Maintain separation from inbound pilots and immediately clear the active surface after landing.
  • This is a low training launch, not evidence of paramotor access, towing permission, or unrestricted public recreation.
Additional notes
The Practice Hill is retained as its own real PG launch because the current guide explicitly authorizes P2 practice/training flight from the 30-foot hill. Its simultaneous role as North Knob's LZ is documented to prevent users from treating it as an empty standalone field. No powered use is established.
