Access notes
The launch and LZ are on Montana state trust land. Carry the current Montana state-land recreation permit and obtain a current Bozeman Airforce/local-pilot site briefing. The former Bear Canyon Road route is closed: park at the Mount Ellis trailhead, hike about two miles on state land, and do not cross the creek or neighboring private property.
Site rules
- Carry the current Montana state-land recreation permit and verify current club and land-manager notices before travel.
- Use the Mount Ellis trailhead route, stay entirely on state land, and do not use the closed private Bear Canyon Road access.
- Always obtain a local site briefing, do not fly alone or without a local pilot present, and follow current USHPA operating limits; the club strongly recommends current USHPA membership and at least P2.
- Use club radio frequency 151.505 after confirming it with pilots on site, avoid nearby houses and farms, and keep all launch, flight, landing, and return movement on state land.
- Training and mid launch are P2 unless under instruction; the upper launch is P3.
Launch directions
SW, W, NW
Direction notes
Club guidance describes SW-NW as flyable with west ideal; use the narrower published envelope for the selected upper, mid, or training launch.
Safety notes
- The small ridge needs enough wind to soar but provides no safe LZ if blown behind it; push out early and do not accept marginal penetration.
- Midday thermal bubbles can be strong close to terrain. Barbed wire crosses the bottom of the hill and a powerline crosses the far end of the LZ.
- SW through NW can work, with west preferred. The published upper, mid, and training launches have different rating and direction envelopes.
- The launch is 7.785 km and the disclosed LZ is 7.529 km from FAA heliport 0MY1; neither intersects current FAA Restricted/Prohibited airspace.
Additional notes
Current club guidance and a June 2026 source edit establish active PG and a standing permit/local-briefing path. No PPG use is claimed.
